Entry #7 Fast Food

The following comic strip hints at the idea connected to our eating habits and the current American medical system.

Nowadays, many people prefer and some don't really have a choice to eat fast food such as hamburgers, fried chicken, or pizza. It's convenient and cheap. It's for everyone. However, the greatest disadvantage of fast food is the adverse effect it has on our health. It contains higher amounts of unwanted nutrients like salt, fat and various types of additives (artificial chemicals). Very small amounts of fruits and vegetables are present in fast food. Moreover, serving 'larger portions' when most people don't need it has led to several health problems. We only require a small amount of salt to maintain the health of cells. Obviously, fast food is rich in salt which adversely affects the heart health and overall health of an individual. Customers can become obese and develop diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure if they consume too much fast food.

This brings me back to me pointing out the cost factor of fast food. When it only costs a person $10-$15 essentially to feed their family in minutes versus double or triple that price to cook a meal at home and it could take an hour or two why wouldn't they eat out a lot? Also, some families can only afford to eat out. However, eating fast food is not cheaper than cooking at home in the long run. The pills that a person will most likely be prescribed from having high blood pressure can cost them up to hundreds of dollars. This is the same as the insulin that will be needed from having diabetes.

Although fast food is convenient and a tasty addition to a diet it can have serious health and cost effects. People should learn to choose fast food carefully and remember the pleasure of eating well. It is not necessary to boycott fast food restaurants, but it is important to limit how often we eat them.
