Entry #9 College vs. Highschool
As summer rapidly came to an end and my first day of college inched closer and closer, I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn't really know what to expect other than it was going to be a whole new world. Now, as the end of my first semester of college is approaching, I still do not know everything I need to know in order to be successful, but I have noticed a couple of major differences as I am sure everyone else in my position has. I wish I would have known these differences before coming to college!
The first major difference was homework, homework and more homework. In high school, I had a lot of homework (at least I thought I did) but it would never take me that long to do so I had the rest of my day to hang out with my friends or do whatever I wanted. Even on the days when I didn't feel like doing or simply forgot about it I never stressed because I was able to turn it in late and still get full credit. However, in college, I have had some type of homework every day of the week for at least one of my classes and if I don't turn it in on time then points will be deducted and some of my teachers don't even accept late work! I barely have time to hang out with friends because of how much homework I get assigned some weeks, but I'm used to it at this point!
The second major difference was that you have to pay for everything! I took for granted the fact that in high school I was provided with everything I needed for free. You are no longer supplied textbooks. calculators, pens, highlighters, goggles, etc. You have to pay for all of it! And textbooks are not cheap. My math textbook was $212! Besides that everything else is reasonably priced. However, being a full-time college student means you are going to work less which means you won't have as much money as you normally would to go out with friends or buy new clothes. Don't take high school or what it gives you for granted!
The last difference would be it's all on you! Your teachers aren't going to hold your hand anymore and keep reminding you of what you have to do. They are going to tell you one time and one time only and after that, you can decide if you are going to do it or not. I promise you they will not care if you decide to slack off because you're paying for it!
With the right mindset, anyone is more than capable of completing college and still having fun!

This post is relatable. Like in high school I had no home work whats so ever, and when I was given homework, I completed it right away because it was short, fast, and easy. Now in college I'm stacked with home work everyday.
ReplyDeleteAnother timely and well-organized entry. Why aren't more people reading and commenting on this blog? Good work, Andrew!
